Fitness Competition Guidelines

Purchase Tickets at Student Union Box Office

  • Tickets are available for purchase online. Please visit the Buy Tickets page.

Participant Eligibility

  • Non-student participants must raise $40.00 to compete.
  • Student participants must rais $15.00 to compete.
  • Participants must be 16 years of age or older to compete; if under 18 years of age, a parental consent form is required. Please download and complete the Release Form.
  • Before participants compete they are required to sign a personal waiver and release of liability
  • Participants can compete individually or as teams.

Teams

  • Teams will compete against teams, and individuals will compete against individuals.
  • Teams can be comprised of a maximum of 6 individuals.
  • Participants must register as a team with an organization member or on the website.
  • Game times are first come first play; teams may only play two basketball games in an hour, two volleyball games in an hour, and two badminton games in an hour.
  • All teams are responsible for wearing similar uniforms.
  • During group games, if two teams have similar colors, pennies will be distributed to one of the teams.
  • In group play, only members of that team may play together; team members may not compete against each other in group play.
  • In individual activities, team members may participate individually and their points will be awarded to the group total.

Signing-Up

  • Once money is raised, tickets can be purchased from 1) Student Union box office or 2) The Website starting in December
  • Money is due one week before the event.
  • If competing in group games, teams can sign up for games on the website.

Participating on Event Day

  • There is no minimum or maximum amount of time participants can compete.
  • Participants can compete in as many events as they want; the goal is to receive as many points as possible.
  • Once a participant has left the event, they are not allowed to resume physical activities.
  • All participants will be given a “Fitness Card” at the registration desk to keep track of their points.
  • After each activity, participants need to have their Fitness Card signed off by an authorized individual to receive their points.
  • Participants receive points for the following physical activities completed during the event:
    • Fitness class (10 points).
    • Walking 1 mile (3 points).
    • Running 1 mile (3 points).
    • Cycling 1 mile (1 point).
    • Basketball game (5 points).
    • Volleyball game (5 points).
    • Badminton game (5 points).
    • Winning a group game (3 points).
    • 50 sit-ups (1 point).
    • 15 push-ups (1 point).
    • Jump roping 15 minutes (3 points).

Walking/Running Activities

  • Participants choosing to walk or run one mile can view the route here.
  • Once a participant reaches the starting line he or she will check in with an authorized individual. Upon competing each lap, their card will be checked off by an authorized individual.
  • After completion of the walk/run, participants are asked to return to Fetzer Gym.

Fitness Classes

  • Classes will be taught by certified instructors.
  • Pre-registration is recommended, but not required.
  • Participants will sign up for specific classes on the website prior to the event.
  • Classes will be 30 minutes long.

Group Games

  • All games are played in 15 minute intervals, with 30 minutes intervals between each game.
  • All games will be under the supervision of officials.
  • All decisions by officials and competition administrators are final.

Basketball Guidelines

  • Games will be played on half court; three versus three.
  • Participants under the age of 18 are only allowed to play games in the 16 to 18 age category.
  • Coin toss will determine who has possession first.
  • Games will be played to fifteen minutes, the team with the most points at the end of the game wins.
  • Substitutions within the team in a particular game are permitted in a specific group activity.
  • If game is tied at the end of regulation play, the first team that scores wins.

Volleyball Guidelines

  • Games be played full court; four versus four.
  • Coin toss will determine who serves first.
  • Rally scoring will be used, every time the ball hits the floor, a point will be scored.
  • The team that scores the point receives the next serve.
  • The first two games are played to 10 points and the third game is played to 5 points.
  • Games must be won by 2 points.
  • The winning team must win two out of three games.
  • In the event of a tie, an extra game is played, which must be won by 2 points.

Badminton Guidelines

  • Games will be played singles (2 players total) or doubles (four players total).
  • Coin toss will determine who serves first.
  • Games will be played to 15 points.
  • In the event of a tie, an extra game is played, which must be won by 2 points.

Non-Participating Persons

  • Persons coming to watch the event or cheer on friends/family are permitted to attend, with an admittance charge of $2.00.

Prizes

  • Individuals/teams achieving point thresholds win prizes.
  • The team that receives the most points overall wins first place.

 

 

 

NC Children's Heart Center

This year Start for the Heart will be donating all their proceeds to the North Carolina Children's Heart Center at UNC Hospitals.

ImageThe North Carolina Children’s Heart Center is the largest children’s heart program in North Carolina and one of the most comprehensive pediatric cardiovascular programs in the United States.
The center is affiliated with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine, and is based at the North Carolina Children’s Hospital on the UNC campus. Each year the center performs and interprets over 15,000 non-invasive procedures and conducts over 7,000 pediatric cardiology outpatient visits.
