Start for the Heart

Start for the Heart is a student led organization at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Our mission is to provide financial support to underprivileged children with heart disease in North Carolina by hosting an annual fundraiser. Our fundraiser is a fitness competition for students and community members in the Triangle area. The competition is designed to help fund medical services to underprivileged patients and increase public awareness about congenital heart disease.

This year Start for the Heart's fitness competition will be held on January 20, 2008 from 8 AM until 8 PM. Participants in the Fitness Competition may compete as individuals or teams. Tickets are $20 for non students, $15 for college students, and $10 for high-school students! You can compete in fitness activities such as group games (basketball, volleyball, and badminton), fitness classes (kickboxing, yoga, aerobics, and more), and individual exercises (walking, running, jump roping, push-ups and sit-ups). Points will be given for each completed activity and prizes will be awarded to those having the most points. Participants will receive FREE breakfast, lunch, and dinner on event day!

Start for the Heart is looking for motivated, passionate, and dedicated students to help out with their major events on campus. If you are interested in becoming a member please email Start4theheart@unc.edu. Meetings are on Sundays at 8PM at the Student Union. Please feel free to drop by!

Featured News: Fitness Competition!

Prizes for the individual winner include gift certificates to Dicks Sporting Goods ($50), Target ($75), Maggianos ($50), and Weaver Street Market ($50). Prizes for the winning team include signed items from the UNC men and women's basketball teams, football team, baseball team, softball team, and an invitation to Start for the Heart's Gala at the Carolina Alumni Center on Friday, April 11.

NC Children's Heart Center

This year Start for the Heart will be donating all their proceeds to the North Carolina Children's Heart Center at UNC Hospitals.

The North Carolina Children’s Heart Center is the largest children’s heart program in North Carolina and one of the most comprehensive pediatric cardiovascular programs in the United States.
The center is affiliated with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine, and is based at the North Carolina Children’s Hospital on the UNC campus. Each year the center performs and interprets over 15,000 non-invasive procedures and conducts over 7,000 pediatric cardiology outpatient visits.
